We survived "The Great Blizzard of 2010".
I am sorry but I had to laugh every time I heard that phrase on the news these last few days regarding the storm we got yesterday. It was supposed to be one of the worst in years, of epic proportions.
It wasn't that bad.
I mean sure it was a lot of snow in a short amount of time. I mean sure we could barely look out our window and see our neighbors next door. Sure the wind was astronomical, I truly think that was the worst part. And yes it is unbelievably cold like -15 cold, but the great blizzard I don't think so. I am grateful schools were cancelled, businesses were closed, Eric arrived home safe and sound through the canyon by 2 pm a good two hours before it started. But honestly I was expecting more much more, from the way they talked this thing up.
My day yesterday started out crazy. As moms do you find if you don't plan out every little detail to the very last minute, your day can catapult into a disaster if even one minute gets thrown off. Or is that just me? Am I the only loon that has to schedule a time to eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast or it doesn't get done.
I double booked myself major for yesterday. Luke's class was having Thanksgiving Feast, grandparents, parents, families were invited of course that coincided with Lance's Thanksgiving Feast that I had promised to be a room mother for. No problem Eric doesn't have class on Tuesday's he would go with Luke I would go with Lance. Except for one thing, a surprise meeting last minute, Eric is out. Okay no problem my dear sweet mother in law offered to come up and go with Luke while I would go with Lance.
6:00 am -- Get up, get ready.
6:30 am -- Get boys up, breakfast on the table, bags packed, Katelynn fed.
7:45 -- Pile everyone in the car, drop off Lance at Kindergarten. Normally I just drop him off out front so I don't have to haul everybody inside, but I need to ask his teacher something. I haul Katelynn out the wind is already arrived, Luke is sliding all over the place and Lance is bellowing at us all to hurry up, he is excited for his feast.
7:55 am -- We finally make it inside the school, his teacher greets us at the door. Surprise Kindergarten has been cancelled for the day, due to the coming storm. Lance is devastated, he wanted that feast which has now been postponed until next Monday. I am thrilled! One that I didn't just drop him off like I normally due, poor little fella would have been stranded. And two I get to now attend Luke's feast.
8:00 am --Hurry and call my mother in law, tell her I don't need her to come up anymore unless of course she wants to.
8:30 am --Drop Luke off at school.
9:00 am -- Arrive back home, make beds, clean up breakfast, start a load of laundry, glance at the Feast instructions. Whoops I forget I am supposed to bring a pie.
9:45 am --Pile Lance and Katelynn in the car and drive to Village Inn to buy a banana cream pie. Listen to Lance complain, complain and complain some more about how "it's just not fair, I don't get my feast and Lukey does, I don't want to go, I just want Kindergarten."
10:30 am -- Back at Sound Beginnings to watch my cute little Indian, sing 10 little Indians.

11:00 am -- The feast begins, they had everything turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, green beans, rolls, sweet potatoes and a bazillion pies.
The turkey cupcakes were favorites in this family.Except for their stupid mom took a picture of the turkey cupcake backwards, stupid, you can't even see his cute face.
12:00 pm -- we leave Sound Beginnings the sky is eerie looking it's like you can just feel the storm brewing, I become anxious to get home.
12:30 pm -- Arrive back home and flip on the weather channel. See that all schools have been cancelled, including the University's, most importantly Weber State.
1:00 pm -- Call Eric, find out he is on his way home, having just reached the canyon. The winds are picking up, but still no sign of snow.
1:30 pm -- My father in law arrives, he was just in the area and dropped in to say hi to the kids, he waits around until Eric arrives home a few minutes later. Then we kick him out, he needs to make it home through the canyon before the storm hits.
2:00 pm -- I bundle the kids in their snowsuits they head outside with their friends, a last excursion before they are summoned in.
3:00 pm -- The wind picks up like crazy, it's unsafe for the kids to be outside anymore, in they come for hot chocolate and a movie.
4:00 pm --Miss Katelyn looks cute, I take some pictures. The house looks weird, dark and eerie, it's coming.
4:30 pm -- The first flakes arrive, it's hard to tell what is new snow and what is just snow from our previous weekend storm being blown by the wind.
4:45 pm -- In just 15 short minutes, we are in a full out blizzard, it's spooky yet mesmerizing too watch.
5:00 pm -- My mother calls it just hit Brigham, she wants to know how bad it is here?
5:02 pm -- My mother in law calls, in Layton they have still not seen any snow, she wants to know when did it hit, how bad was it, the details?
5:15 pm -- My sister calls it has hit Layton and just like I said within 15 minutes you can't see your hand in front of your face.

6:00 pm --Apparently I am not the only one who enjoyed watching the madness outside.
Lukey took up permanent resident by our little window in our entryway.
6:30 pm -- We have dinner, we leave our kitchen window blinds open, just so we can see what's going on. It's still coming down hard.
7:00 pm -- We bath the kids, have prayer, read scriptures, story time, sing songs. Put the kids to bed, Lance is scared he doesn't like the loud wind.
8:00 pm -- All kids are asleep, Eric and I sit down to bowls of hot cocoa ice cream and of course hot cocoa.
9:00 pm -- I pull out my Mary Higgins Clark book to finish off, a good book, a storm a brewing, comfy in my bed, perfection.
11/24/10
This is what my front porch looked like when I pulled my door open this morning. Keep in mind it's our front porch it's covered, usually even in a bad storm the porch remains pretty much untouched. So I guess it was a doozy, but still not the doozy I was expecting.

"The Great Blizzard of 2010" -- we are alive and well!
