Loubird
This summer has been kind of a weird one worrying about this boy. I think I have mentioned a time or two he had some stuff going on that had Eric and I pretty alarmed and anxious for a good chunk of the summer. He has always been really stable in his hearing loss, his audio gram not budging really much at all since his initial diagnosis at twelve months old. Right near the end of the school year in a routine hearing evaluation he scored significantly lower than what was typical for him. Not to concerned at this point we thought it was probably just an off day and his audiologist just recommended retesting in a few weeks once summer session started up again at Sound Beginnings.
Sounded good to us and we put it in the back of our minds for a few weeks.
Fast forward to 2 days after we get back from our Island Park trip and Eric gets back from Korea, he is retested and scores the exact same thing. Again much lower than normal for Luke. By this time we begin to panic a bit, his audiologist and therapists are both concerned and also noticing a difference in his attention and hearing in class and therapy. We set up a plan with them to start checking things off the list of what could be causing this sudden drop in hearing.
Step one is it his hearing aids? No we order him a new trial pair wait a few weeks and retest.
Again same score significantly lower.
We take him to an ENT at Primary Children's who does blood work and schedules an MRI.
In the meantime while we are waiting to check off a clear MRI Eric and I are trying to wrap the idea around our brains that Luke has reached a point where hearing aids just are not able to give him what he needs to hear and function anymore and perhaps the time has come for a Cochlear Implant.
His audiologist and most others involved seemed to think this would be the case and have always tried to prepare us that where Luke has been borderline hearing aids/ cochlear implant since birth this has always been a good possibility.
My mind is so unsettled by this.
While there is no doubt in my mind how amazing technology is and how grateful I am that that option exists it hurt my heart a great deal to think of him getting a cochlear implant.
For lots of reasons really the main being it's a whole new way of hearing and much less natural sounding than hearing aids which are just amplifying normal sounds.
If you have a profoundly deaf child of course this is ideal any sound is better than no sound.
But Luke has hearing still available to him, he has always thrived with hearing aids and my heart was happy at knowing that he was hearing the same thing I was in the same tones just with the help of hearing aids.
At the same time I was drastically worried with a new school year approaching quickly.
We have worked so hard, Luke has worked so hard to be where he is at today.
Kindergarten was an amazing experience and I can't tell you how proud I was to know my little severely hearing impaired guy was at the top of his class at the end of the year.
It may seem like no big thing but for him this was so huge.
I was terrified at the idea of starting into 1st grade with all that was going on and watching him struggle to keep up with his peers.....because we couldn't figure out what was going on with his hearing.
And then around the same time we get two new pieces of information.
One he retests again but now the score has raised not to where he was before but much higher than what he had been scoring these last few weeks.
Which leaves us hopeful for like a day.....thinking maybe it was just a fluke thing and whatever was going on is working itself out.
Then the ENT informs us his blood work comes back as showing positive for having fought CMV in his antibodies.
Meaning at some point in his life he has fought this.
Now my knowledge is still very limited but from what I understand CMV is very common but only affects those with very low immune systems.
We think we may have an answer as to why he is hearing impaired in the first place.
His doctor says it is very common in premature infants because of their incredibly low immune systems. And is also one of the leading causes to hearing loss in preemies. The problem is it creates damage to the cochlea and structures of the surrounding area and can be a degenerative condition. Meaning his hearing is likely to get worse over the years.
Suddenly the MRI becomes a much needed key to figuring this all out.
It will show damage done to his cochlea and whether it is likely to keep getting worse.
At this point we have no idea really what to think.
On one hand he seems to be doing better, his hearing evaluations are going much better and scoring much higher and in general just more Luke like.
On the other hand we are very concerned with what this positive CMV results could mean.
We had his ENT and two audiologists strongly suggesting to us to go ahead with the MRI we had scheduled for last week.
Just yuck I was dreading this day, because it involves a six year old having to hold still for almost an hour while the scan is done they recommend sedating for it.
First off can I just say how grateful I was for little George the monkey this day.
It's no secret my boy loves his monkey and it meant the world to my heart knowing that little monkey was bringing him comfort on a scary day.
We arrived at Primary Children's at 12:30 and didn't end up leaving until close to 6:00.
It was a long, traumatic, exhausting day and so hard on Luke.
He was a trooper but man there were moments that were hard to watch as his parents and left me feeling heartsick for those parents who have to watch their children suffer so much more than I had to this day.
Oh bless those children and their families, I can't begin to comprehend what they go through.
The moments that stood out to me the very most was one getting his IV.
Oh boy it was not fun at all, they missed the first time and had to try again.
And my little Luke was clinging to Eric for all he was worth his little cries of "they are hurting my skin", was breaking my heat.
And then waiting for the sleepy medicine to kick in was excruciating he was terrified and did not want to go to sleep.
He fought it for all he was worth but it was in that moment I found myself so grateful to be a mother.
And not just any mother but his mother.
He wouldn't lay down so he just leaned against me while I talked to him.
He was a little loopy and not making much sense but the only thing that seemed to help calm him down was the sound of my voice.
So I talked of everything I could think of....Halloween, where we would go for dinner, what he would pick as a prize when this stupid day was over, how proud I was of him.
Eventually those little eyes shut and we could lay him down.
We had an hour to kill before he would be done and taken to the recovery room where Eric and I could wait for him to awaken..
He came out of it just fine, starving but fine he hadn't eaten since 10 the night before so he scarfed down all the snacks I had brought him as we waited for the all clear to head out to our next appointment. We were meeting the ENT to go over the results.
Bless his little heart he could not keep his eyes open for the life of him while we waited in the ENT's office. He slept through trying to weigh him, taking his temperature and by the time they wanted to look in his ears he was good and grumpy at everybody and refused to leave Eric's arms even for something so minor.
And by this point my mama bear was out and I got a little snippy with the poor nurse who kept trying to wake him up to weigh him when can't she just go check down the hall with what the imaging people had got not a few hours before. Just leave my poor boy alone! At this point in the game I was so not in the mood for stupid things.
Thankfully by the time the doctor came in and agreed with me to just let the exhausted overwhelmed little guy sleep, I was in a much better mood to hear what he had to say with my sleeping Luke in my arms.
Could not have gone better.
His scan was absolutely clear of any structural damage and he had no reason to think it should get any worse as the years go on.
Combined with his most recent scoring in hearing evaluations he considered this very good news and the best possible outcome we could have received.
We still don't really know why the crazy results earlier on in the summer.
And of course we never know what may lie ahead but I think through all of this it allowed me to truly become okay with the fact that one day if he does need an implant I can more easily be ready to accept it.
I am just so grateful that day is not today.
We made good on our promise of a prize and it was amazing to see how a trip to Toys R' Us and the Spaghetti Factory cheered up our little Loubird and he was back to his usual bouncy happy little self within a matter of minutes.
Mikey the Ninja Turtle is happy as a clam and considers that day to be "so much fun"......hmmm....I guess he forgot a few moments of it:) But hey if all he remembers is his Ninja Turtle Prize, spaghetti dinner and his mom and dads undivided attention all day long...... well then yes it was a good day.
My Loubird how I love you little boy.
You have this amazing ability to weasel your way into everybody's heart.
In the scheme of things this experience was small, especially considering all that you have already overcome in life.
But man I love you, I worry about you, but above all I know that whatever life throws at you, you always come out on the winning side......stomping on everything that ever tries to get in your way.
Your smile shines, your big blue eyes twinkle and your infectious little personality radiates out of you.
Thanks for being mine little one.

Homecoming Queen
A few weeks ago it was Utah State's big Homecoming weekend.
Little K's dance studio got to be in the Homecoming parade which means little K got to live out her dream of being a princess, sitting on a float, waving to all her admirers.
She was pretty darn excited about it.
Especially when one of her buddy's sweet Kylie was going to be in the parade with her.
Kylie just happens to live next door to us and it so worked out that we would be giving a ride to Kylie while her mom went to the parade route and saved us a good spot to watch the girls.
I was so so so grateful for this little buddy of K's.
As you can see she is quite a few years older but boy these two get along well together.
And Kylie has just enough of a nurturing personality that she takes little K under her wing and watches out for her.
I don't think I would have been brave enough to leave my little baby in the hands of her very new dance teachers on a big float for a few hours all by herself.
But with Kylie right there next to her, I felt okay about it and more importantly so did K.
My boys and Kylie's brothers were in heaven waiting for the parade to start.
This sweet family is moving in a month and it breaks my heart to even think about them no longer being our next door neighbors.
Why does it have to be so hard when good friends move away?
Perfect Fall weather for the morning.
Overcast with a chance of rain, but it never did, just left us with a pleasantly cool morning sitting along the main street of Logan.
This kid and marching bands oh how he loves them.
And finally we spot our girl in all her glory.
Oh wait a minute she looks bored out of her mind.
A little grumpy......
Sure as heck not participating in the dance.....
And tired, very tired.
Despite what it seems in these pictures she really did have a good time.
We just happened to be at the very end of the route and she was getting a little antsy by the time she got to us.
She never did see us either....Eric, the boys and I were yelling our heads off trying to get her attention, but she was oblivious.
Thought obviously the little girl next to her heard us loud and clear and was looking at me like I had lost it!
Oh well we loved seeing our little Homecoming Queen.
She sure did look cute up there!

First Days
School is here, has been for a few weeks now.
It felt sad and a little yucky at first letting summer go and trying to get back into a scheduled routine.
But now that we have been doing it a few weeks and figured out how to make the days go smoothly, it actually feels pretty good to have a bit more structure.
This year felt pretty anti climatic as far as first days go.
Lance started 3rd grade and Luke is now in 1st.
Lance was most excited about the fact that now as a big 3rd grader he joins the older kids upstairs in the school instead of the lower grades on the first floor.
Luke was pretty sad that he no longer got to use the Kinder playground but now uses the big playground.
Yeah it only took him about a day to realize that was actually a pretty awesome thing.
The only other big difference is having both my boys in the same school all day long.
It feels so weird not to be going to Sound Beginnings every day.
Luke is still doing therapy there twice a week after school but it really just feels so different.
Different in a good way, I am so happy for him to be in the place he is at right now.
They both seem to have really great teachers and I am so excited to see what the year brings for them both.
It should be a great one.
First day of 3rd grade.
Looking at these pictures makes me wish I had stuck to my guns and forced hair cuts on these boys.
But I was outnumbered by both of them and their dad.
But, yup they could have both used one, looking a little shaggy if you ask me.
1st day of 1st grade for Loubird!
Our sweet little Granny wanted to come and wish them good luck on their first morning back.
So sweet, gosh how much we love that lady.
Their first day back was kinda crazy.
I thought I would have such a productive busy day with the two of them gone all day.
But by about noon when I realized I had still yet to shower, the day wasn't quite as smooth as I thought it would be.
I finally just gave up on the shower, threw my hair back and K and I made our mandatory back to school cookies for our school boys.
Cookies are more important than showers anyway right?
Of course they are because the rule around here is you can have as many cookies as you want.
But each cookie costs them three details of their day.
Amazing the secrets you learn when the cost is in cookies!
They both had great days and I was so relieved to hear how genuinely excited they seemed for the school year.
Which brings us to Miss K.
We are doing Joy School this year and we are so gosh darn excited.
A few moms with other three year olds in our neighborhood have a little class going each week.
Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:00.
We take turns teaching so once every six weeks little K and I get to host her little friends at our house.
And for the other five weeks she goes to a buddy's house, learns and has some fun for herself.
She loves every second of it and was so excited for her first day to come.
She is so happy to be going to school just like her boys.
And one more first day for this girl.
We have a dancer in the house.
Oh my she is so adorable and has been so excited to start her very first dance class.
Her favorite part is of course the dance clothes.
She thinks she is a beautiful ballerina and twirls around the house squealing "it's so wonderful, I am so wonderful".
Yeah she might be just a bit full of herself!
It's a combo class of ballet, tap and tumbling.
Ballet is her favorite but just tonight we have been treated to an hour long show of her somersaults she is learning in tumbling.
Such a girl and oh how I love her.
She's growing up this little K of ours.
Oh how we love you little lady!

Ten on Ten: Sept 2013
Ten pictures taken over ten hours on the tenth of the month.
Wouldn't you know my feet are somewhere down there past this 32 week belly, I was just happy I could still shove my feet into these shoes.
Flip flops are my best friend these days.....all summer really!
And most likely into Fall until this baby comes out!
A little ballerina stopping to smell the flowers on the way to dance class.
This week I am breaking out the Fall decorations......this was as far as I got today.
Candy pumpkins.
Tomorrow pumpkin candle is making it's debut!
And we know school is in session along with all of it's extracurricular activities because the only nap K gets is in the car being shuttled from one thing to the next.
Therapy for Luke.
Then piano for Lance.
Followed by piano for Luke
All up on USU campus.
Feeding the meters is a sought after prize.
Homework generally gets done while waiting for each other's piano lessons.
Behind every door is a piano student.
You should hear the noise in this hallway!
Kinda fun.
Tuesday's are crazy.
We either have leftovers or breakfast for dinner.
Tonight was pancakes.
Keeping his eye on the church just waiting to leave for Scouts.
They had a field trip tonight and he was most excited for it.
He sat staring at the church from the backyard for a good twenty minutes hoping somebody would arrive early so he could head over as well.
And there is Luke in the background taking off for an after dinner jump on the tramp.
Ahh daddy is home...
Pretty sure the conversation is all about what she learned at dance class and how beautiful she looked in her dance clothes.
This girl she's your typical girl.
Love every bit of her.
Happy tenth it was a busy but good one!

August Instagram
A look at August through my phone....
Weapons down says sensei....such Ninjago dorks.
Stake swim party at the Aquatic center!
Swim lessons have begun....
A little Blondie eating a donut.
How we do family night!
Earned his bobcat in Scouts tonight!
She makes approximately 30 trips to that drinking fountain every swim lesson. For a newly potty trained girl it sure does make for a long drive home:)
Luke's at a sleepover with Grandma Tereasa.....so these two are having a sleepover in K's bed!
Home from his adventure!
Thanks Grandma Tereasa!
Happy 80th birthday Granny O!
Bless his little heart he was so brave with that darn needle. He earned that prize and ice cream cone!
Sipping our Italian Cream Soda's.
Vanilla for me, orange of course for him.
Checking the lists.....1st and 3rd grade!
For this reason alone I am not ready for Fall.
Man those flowers make me so happy.
Now this I will miss when school starts.....
Spa night with Activity Days was great fun thanks to some fun moms who let their daughters go to town on makeovers.
Even little K got herself a manicure!
A quick stop for yogurt then it's home to bed for these first day of school boys!
The rule: as many cookies as they want but each cookie costs them three more details of their school days.
Oh I love these kids!
Yesterday was rough without her boys to play with; but today the princess is in reign.
Good day for a bike race.....
Girl time we are headed to a bridal shower!
Melt my heart I love this Grandpa.
2 seconds later candy went flying.
Good swing Loubird!
Jill I must say you made big in the friend department today.
Thanks for bringing her all of these princess toys!
Eric is getting some practice time in for his upcoming piano performance at a baptism.
This is the first time I have ever let her walk in the grocery store.....she thinks she's something!
Is this homework scene in your house to?
This funny boy had computer class today.....he needs an adaptor to go from his FM system to the computer so he can hear it. The district will make sure he gets one but for today he said "only the kids with ears could hear with the headphones not me". Made me laugh....the kids with ears!
